Let’s be honest, the entertainment industry, Hollywood in particular, is in the objectification business of people, women especially. If people were chosen based solely on their talent and ability, instead of their looks, age, ethnicity, orientation, gender or anything else not at all related to their capabilities, entertainment in general, I think, would overall be better than what passes for entertainment now. We certainly wouldn’t have heard or had to deal with the Kardashians. Or lived in an age of the “Twilight” saga. How about “Friends”? While entertaining at times, that (all white) cast wasn’t chosen based off their talent.
I won’t say all, but most other businesses hire people based off their ability and, because it’s actually against the law for the most part, can’t discriminate based on outward appearance, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, etc. and yet, the entertainment industry is allowed to get away with such practices; blatantly, I might add. Or put in some producer’s contract that he can’t be fired or sued if he get’s accused of rape or sexual assault. Or hold what amounts to casting couch sessions and ridicule young women already uncomfortable with their bodies, strip naked and be told by yet another, middle-aged woman, that they’re overweight. Maybe if the various companies of this industry were held to the same standards and laws most other companies in different businesses are held to, maybe, just maybe, there wouldn’t be this rampant abuse, assault and discrimination (against women mostly) that goes on.
Maybe while we’re at it, we can outlaw the paid stalkers (I think they’re called paparazzi). Come on, seriously? People with telephoto lens and that not are allowed to invade people’s privacy like this and get away with it? I don’t give a fuck who the person is or how famous they may or may not be, be stalked like that is just ludicrous, not to mention unsafe. And don’t give that freedom of press bullshit either, the press, at least by its most basic definition, is supposed to provide a benefit to society by reporting relevant news. What someone wore while getting coffee, or how they look in a bikini, does not constitute news in my opinion. If I were one of the famous people being followed like that, I would turn it around on them and post their picture everywhere with made up stories.
I’m still baffled by people who still want to go into this industry knowing these things. But to each their own.
I’m of course speaking out of turn, being that I’m not in that business (nor would I be, since I’m not one of the “beautiful” people, nor do I have any talent to speak of other than making people uncomfortable and bringing out the worst in them), and therefore don’t really know what I’m talking about and should just shut the fuck up and go back under my bridge.
And that’s all I have to say about that.
