All Americans should be required, at a minimum, to read the below books (should be part of high school curriculum).
- Warrior Woman: The Story of Lozen, Apache Warrior and Shaman
- Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee: An Indian History of the American West
- Trail of Tears: The Rise and Fall of the Cherokee Nation
The next time some politician starts complaining about some other country not honoring treaties, point them in this direction. Every, and I mean every, so-called treaty the United States made with the Indians was broken before the ink dried. Most of the time, the treaty that the Indians thought they were signing was not at all what was on that paper. Many of them did not write and certainly did not read (not because they were unintelligent, but because their culture did not have need for it and passed along their history and knowledge through spoken word) and the alleged translators were saying one thing about what a treaty said, which was generally the complete opposite of reality.
And that’s all I have to say about that.
