I don’t when this happened, but recently, like in past month or so, I started listening to country music. Don’t get me wrong, I like most music, but never really got into country. Sure, when I was younger, there were a few songs I took a liking to, such as Charlie Daniels “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” or Kenny Roger’s “The Gambler” and even “Elvira” by the Elk Ridge Boys, but, other than that, I wasn’t what you would call a fan.
Thinking back, I guess it probably started with Darius Rucker (lead vocalist for Hootie & the Blowfish). I always liked Darius’ singing and went to look for other music that he may have done and, wouldn’t you know, he sings country as well. The first song I think I listened to was “Wagon Wheel“, which I found pretty catchy. His other music is great, too.
After I was hooked on Darius, that lead to groups like Sugarland (“Stay“, which is targeted more towards the fairer sex, is very powerful and Jennifer Nettles‘ voice is beyond amazing. Then it just went on from there; Chris Stapleton (kind of old school), Jamey Johnson and a slew more.
What I think I like most about country, is the guitar playing; mostly acoustic guitar. I have two such instruments and can’t play either of them to save my life. I blame on my big fingers and lack of dexterity (and patience), but really it’s because I’m a slack-ass and never really took the time to learn. Plus, I think to learn a musical instrument, you have start at a younger age before your adult brain gets in the way. Maybe I’ll buckle down and learn how to play them.
And that’s all I have to say about that.
